Current Activities For Kids (and Adults)

Summer Scavenger Hunt - History Edition - This is a scavenger hunt that also teaches you about the history of Bainbridge Gardens. Younger kids can simply find common objects on the property. Older kids can find specific objects or photos related to our 100 year history! It's free and if you find all of the objects you get a prize! Drop by the front counter to pick up a list.

Grow a Butterfly - Two times: June 27/28 and July 25/26. This is a fun activity for kids and adults alike. Learn about butterflies and the important role pollinators play in the garden. $20 FEE. You'll get two painted lady caterpillars, a habitat, an activity book, and instruction. Please note that butterflies take about three weeks to emerge from metamorphosis. CALL US TO RESERVE YOUR CATERPILLARS. 206-842-5888

Create a Fairy Garden - $25 PER GARDEN. Call to make a reservation for a hands-on planting session here at Bainbridge Gardens. Fee includes a pot, soil, three starter plants, and fairy dust! Participants will receive 20% off the regular price of accessories used for your fairy garden, valid only at the time of your reservation. This activity is available any day, however, reservations are required. Children must be accompanied by an adult

Fairy Garden Tea Party - Saturday, July 18th, 1pm - $35 PER GARDEN. This is like the fairy garden activity above, but amped up into a fun tea party. You'll get a treat and paper tea cup to fill with a beverage. And we'll all build fairy gardens together!

Some new arrivals this week:
Lots of colorful, compact shrubs for full sun that are also drought tolerant.
We have Abelia 'Kaleidoscope', 'Magic Carpet' Spiraeas and Rockroses.
We also got in: Star Jasmines, new Dwarf Hydrangeas like Seaside Serenade Crystal Cove and Cape May,
Amber Tropical Hibiscus and lots of Red and White Mandevillas to give containers bright Color all summer long!

Our Kwanzan Japanese Flowering Cherries are in now and ready to plant!

Aug 5:

A big shipment of carnivorous plants have arrived, including many types of sundews (Drocera), big pitcher plants (Sarracenia), and more!

We also received planting medium for your carnivorous plants. Remember that carnivorous plants do not grow well in soils that are rich or high in nutrients.


July 23:

March 07:

Here are a sampling of unusual fruits that came in this week: 

Rare finds like Calomondrin Citrus, popular in the Philippines,
Yuzu which is the hardiest of the Citrus and is used in juices and desserts for its tart but floral flavor,
Meyer Lemons used for fresh eating and cocktails.

We also have hardy olives, figs and currants.

March 05:

Some very lovely flowers have come in including Nemophila, Sweet Peas, and Bread Seed Poppies!

Nemophila is a cute trailing annual that is profilic and attracts pollinators.  Baby Blue Eyes (Nemophila menziesii) as the name suggests has a beautiful blue flower with a white center.  Fivespot (Nemophila maculata) has a white flower with a blue spots on the edges.

Bread Seed Poppies have delicate ephemeral pedals and blooms that sway in the garden in breezes.  Plant in clusters.  The bulbous seed pods are showy in garden and are good for cutting and drying and in arrangements.  The poppy seeds can be used for cooking.

Langley Fine Gardens has grown a unique type of asiatic poppy that we now have in stock!

Classics like Russet Burbank and Yukon Gold, but also some really cool ones, including:

Makah Ozette Fingerling
German Butterballs
Viking Purple
Dark Red Norland
Huckleberry Gold
Purple Majesty

The Makah Ozette has a fascinating history, originating in South America, coming to the PNW in the 1700 by Jesuit Missionaries, and then brought to the everyone's attention when it was discovered in a garden in Neah Bay in the 1980s.  Oh and it's a delicious sweet, earthy potato!

Febuary 19:

Houseplants:

This week's shipment of houseplants includes the very popular Monstera Thai constellation, 6 varieties of pothos, as well as some NEW unusual specimens like Dragon Scale Alocasia and Shooting Star Hoya.

We have a wide selection of mini plants perfect for small spaces or terrariums.

Remember our houseplant care supplies are on sale 20% off through the end of February so now is a great time to spoil your plant babies with new lighting, pots or soil treatments.

Trees, shrubs, and fruit:

We received our bare root fruit trees and ornamentals (that we promptly plant up into pots), featuring a new apple called Lucy Glo with a golden blush colored skin with rosy, pink flesh with spritely-sweet flavor.

rightly colored Redtwig dogwood shrubs, like the variety 'Blood Orange' will add some sunshine to our wintry looking gardens.  

Dwarf conifers can add the "wow" factor to any garden with their beautiful shades of gold, emerald green, silvers and bronzes. Their texture adds to their appeal. A few of my favorites include 'Melody' Hinoki Cypress with its golden foliage and lacy needle pattern. 'Mini Twist' Eastern White Pine makes you want to touch it with its curled, silver needles. There are so many to choose from.

Thinking about learning about bonsai gardening? Check out our new pre-bonsai selection, a nice way to get started without using much space. Many of our choices could grow nicely on a deck or patio, as long as they get some bright light.

Soils, amendments, outdoor decor:

The first of our pots and planters for 2025! Pots in three sizes and nine colors with a volcanic textured rim.
Worm Gold Plus is our newest organic soil amendment.  The "plus" is kelp and volcanic rock duct in addition to earthworm castings.

Indoor decor, toys, cards, etc.:

Pastel colored lights! They brighten gray days and dark spaces with cheerful spring color!
