Summertime! And the living is peas-y

Friday, June 24th, 2011

It always seems to happen. When the peony flowers open, it rains and the flowers fill with water and fall over.

I’ve been eating and thinning the radishes and beets so the remaining ones can get larger. My cucumbers are still under row cover, which is a good move because it has still been cool day and night.

I’ve eaten a few of the edible pod sugar snap peas. The ones I grew have no strings along the back.

I’ve also eaten a few strawberries as well. The raspberries are coming.

Say Peas!

Our weather is finally getting warmer. The soil and planting beds are not so wet anymore. The crookneck squash and zucchini are out in the garden with the butternut squash. I will plant my cucumber under row cover this weekend. I planted the basil seeds in 4-inch pots in my house. They should be ready to transplant in about two weeks.

My peas are full of blossoms. I hope to be seeing the little green peas soon and eating them in a couple of weeks. The green peppers are setting flowers.

Get Planting!

Friday, June 3rd, 2011

My Tall Telephone peas are flowering. I actually picked and ate two whole strawberries!

Spinach is getting taller. Lettuce is doing well. I’m still eating the rhubarb.

The soil is warming up. Time to get everything planted. I’m going to plant my Butternut squash by digging a hole that’s about a foot wide and deep, put in some mushroom compost with the squash and a handful of 5-5-5 all purpose fertilizer.
